Vietnam took delivery of its first Russian-built Project 636 'Kilo'-class diesel-electric submarine (SSK) during a ceremony held at Admiralty Shipyards in St Petersburg on 7 November, according to local media reports.

The first of six improved 'Kilo'-class SSKs on order for the Vietnam People's Navy, Hanoi will be transported to Vietnam on a heavy lift ship in mid-November, a defence industry source told Russia's state-run news agency RIA Novosti. The boat is expected to arrive in Cam Ranh Bay, in Vietnam's Khánh Hòa province, in January 2014. It will then be officially commissioned into service.

Hanoi 's delivery follows the successful completion of three months of sea trials that began in July.
